This chapter put into perspective just how reliant all walks of life are on technology, especially our youngest minds. It talks about how even my generation grew up with technology in the schools, it may have been less than what we possess now, but it is more than our parents had. When my parents were in school, they were banging erasers while even I got to go up to the smart board and play with the cool pen. One of the things I have wondered, and would love to explore more is the option of bringing technology into my class. I want to teach history and I know there are multiple ways to incorporate technology, but I am literally at a loss of where to even start that adventure...so naturally I took to Google...http://www.teachhub.com/12-easy-ways-use-technology-your-classroom-even-technophobic-teachers is a great starting point for beginners to start applying multiple technologies to their classrooms.
Social media is one of the biggest aspects of a person's life, especially young people. I want to teach high school and some aspects of social media would be a good way to reach out to them; social media is a language they speak and understand fluently; and while I'm an old soul and can appreciate a paperback book and a pen sometimes, I realize that is quickly going out of style and tablets, smart-boards, and laptops are quite popular. Students today seem to require a higher level of visual stimulus and that's what technology in the classroom brings. Being quite young myself, I know how to work the basics, but this segment allowed me to broaden my beginning horizons a bit and gave me a good place to start.
I cannot say I blame the students I see on my Facebook, I've had some pretty lengthy lectures where no amount of technology, pictures, videos, or anything was used and quite frankly...my head almost exploded, but the deeper I find myself in school, and the bigger the schools I go to, the more technologically advanced they are which keeps my eyes open a little better.
I want to make my class an environment where it's not so difficult to listen, and maybe it could turn into something that inspired a career for my students. Technology seems to be the only lasting way to leave an impression significant enough to spread the word of my future field of study.
